Shop windows in all the world are sighing in relief. A sad and painful event has nearly come to its end. In 2001 the relationship between contemporary men and shop windows had been severely insulted. That year, in July, that offence had been bloodily avenged, as demanded by any matter of honour. For a shop window should not be considered as a simple artefact: its intrinsic value is in the separation. There is a world outside and a world beyond the window. As always, what really matters is  the world beyond. Humans are not suited for the frivolity of the world outside, where if a body is pushed, it falls and bleeds, where voices shout and eyes cry. Humans are accomplished and contented only beyond the shop window.

During a hot summer, many, many people gathered together in the belief that happiness could be built outside of shop window. In the sweltering heat of July, they tried to say that beyond shop windows one could find the causes of so much human suffering and of thousand unfair injustices.

The falseness  of those ideas is clear to everyone. In fact, beyond the windows we had been long waiting for the opportunity of a showdown.

That foggy July taught a severe, but necessary lesson. Someone died, someone was injured in their bodies and in their souls, but a neat line was drawn. A key concept was reasserted: what matters is the world beyond – there you’ll find what you need to live, to make sacrifices, to suffer for. Beyond, not outside.

The sole natural balance was re-established, and after ten years we can crystallize history with royal edicts that sanction the genuine truth. May the champions of the world beyond, together with every shop window, be praised in the centuries to come. But those who, acting for our sake, exceeded in their deeds should be mildly punished. For he who exaggerates and leaves clear evidence of his mischief is a fool and embarrasses us. On the contrary, those who skilfully spread sand on the desert are appreciable.

Humans who demanded liberation in their world, outside the windows, deserved no mercy at the time and should get none either now or ever. And even if one day the world beyond shop windows should implode, swept away by the knights of the financial apocalypse – those outside must not be treated mercifully and windows must stay firmly at their place. We will defend the glass castle with boiling oil, until the last guard, up to the last divinity.

Thus spoke the gods of the creaking windows. Outside, we hear their noises and watch them wildly floundering about – big gold fish in the aquarium they’ve built for themselves. Neither giving up, nor ready to admit that their world is lame. Their plans for the future are clear, ours much more vague. We slowly learn from our experience, and this process is never painless. We are often forced to learn at our comrades’ expense, and watch our friends being torn away from us. This is how life goes in the world outside. The construction of a collective memory reinforcing our ideas is a long process where we have to incorporate and treasure everything, be it happiness or pain.
